Home Renovation Grants in Victoria

In recent years, several government grants helped homeowners take on renovation and extension projects — especially during the COVID-19 recovery period.

One of the most well-known was the HomeBuilder Grant, which provided eligible owner-occupiers with up to $25,000 toward substantial home renovations or new builds. This was designed to stimulate the construction industry during uncertain times and ran until April 2021.

Other past incentives included:

• Solar and energy-efficiency rebates (some of which are still available — see below)
  
  

• Local council incentives for accessibility upgrades or bushfire resilience
  
  

• Victorian energy upgrades programs for efficient appliances and systems

At the time of writing, there are no major renovation-specific grants offered by the Victorian or Australian governments.

However, first home buyers may still be eligible for the $10,000 First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) in Victoria — especially when buying or building a new home valued up to $750,000. While the First Home Owner Grant isn’t designed to be used directly for renovations, it can still make a difference. Although the funds typically go toward the property purchase itself, the financial relief it provides can free up other cash — allowing you to allocate more of your own money toward post-purchase renovations, upgrades, or finishing touches.

Additionally, homeowners may still qualify for:

• Energy-efficiency rebates through the Victorian Energy Upgrades Program
  
  

• Solar PV and heat pump rebates via Solar Victoria
  
  

• Low-interest green loans for sustainable upgrades (through select lenders)
  
  

We always recommend checking the latest updates from vic.gov.au and federal grant websites, or speaking to a licensed finance broker to see what’s possible.

The short answer? We don’t know.
Large-scale renovation grants like the HomeBuilder scheme were introduced during exceptional circumstances — and it’s unlikely we’ll see programs of that size again anytime soon.
